A food diary will help you realize how much and what you eat; which in turn will help you see where you can cut back. Most popular diet and exercise programs utilize a food diary and/or an exercise journal as an integral part of the programs success. In the above links you will find some of those programs and their journals.

Most people have no idea how much food they eat which may explain why they are not losing weight even though they think they have been eating properly.
Studies show that a food diary or food journal doesn’t just help weight loss — it turbo-charges it. Researchers found that when dieters kept a record of meals and snacks there was always improved weight loss and weight gain. The number of pounds people lost or gain was directly related to the number of days they wrote in their log. Many popular weight loss and weight gain programs asks participants to track what they eat.
Most people will underestimate their daily intake by about 25 percent. In a study led by Cornell University, 105 diners in fast-food restaurants were asked how many calories were in their orders. The diners underestimated the calories by a whopping 38 percent on the larger meals. Even when dietitians attempted to estimate the calorie count of four popular restaurant dishes, they missed the number for each by 250 to 700 calories.
To successfully journal your food and calorie intake, you will first need a resource to find the information. Book stores have some excellent calorie books. But also there are a multitude of online resources as well as mobile phone apps to help you on that.

I have made a simple food journal that can be downloaded and printed for free.I included the healthy choices section to help you remember to not only log what you eat, but check your choices. If you are eating your daily caloric intake but not getting many checks in the healthy choices section, you may want to revisit your meal planning.

If you would rather not deal with paper and pen, there are many online journals, some free and some for a fee that can be used to track your food intake. Thinking of those that I have used,” myfooddiary.com” and “my fitness pal” come to mind.
The key is to write down before or just after you eat. Include the time you ate, what you ate, and how much you ate. If you wait until the end of the day, it is likely that you will forget something and you won’t have an accurate record. For restaurant eating, be sure to write down every ingredient and calculate its nutritional content afterward.
Also, don’t estimate how much you ate, measure it. Most people will under estimate how much is really on their plate. And be honest with yourself; write down every single bite, lick, taste and sips. (BLTS). Maybe not wanting to see it on paper will be deterrent enough to not eat it.
Then at the end of each day, check the results and see where you can reward yourself or make some improvements. That is also a good time to put your journal into an online trackers. Many programs will translate your food intake into charts and nutritional facts which is a helpful tool to review when making your next day meal plan.
